LPG Panic Booking Puts Supply Chain Under Stress

India’s liquefied petroleum gas supply chain is under pressure as disruption in the Strait of Hormuz has triggered panic booking in some areas, even though the government and fuel retailers are trying to prevent a wider shortage. Officials have said refineries are operating at full capacity and surprise checks are being carried out to stop hoarding and black marketing.

LPG Panic Booking Adds To Supply Stress

The current strain has been worsened by panic-driven demand as households rush to secure cylinders amid fears of a prolonged disruption. India’s LPG consumption fell in the first half of March as shipping delays hit supplies, reflecting both logistical pressure and uneven availability across markets. Authorities have been urging states to monitor local distribution closely so retail panic does not worsen the situation.

Hormuz Disruption Hits India LPG Imports

The main problem lies in India’s heavy dependence on LPG imports linked to West Asia and the Strait of Hormuz. Indian-flagged LPG tankers have begun preparing to sail through the route again, but movement remains sensitive and tightly watched. Earlier disruptions left multiple Indian vessels waiting in the Gulf, underlining how vulnerable LPG supply remains to conflict-related shipping risks.

Government Steps Up Supply Monitoring

The government has described the LPG situation as serious, though not out of control, and has pushed for tighter monitoring to keep domestic supplies stable. State authorities have also formed special committees in some regions to prevent shortages, ensure smooth transport and act against hoarding. At the same time, India is exploring alternative supply arrangements and route management to reduce the pressure created by the West Asia crisis.
