Lok Sabha May Rise To 816 For Women’s Quota

The Centre is considering a major increase in Lok Sabha strength to 816 seats as part of a plan to implement one-third reservation for women in Parliament without displacing existing MPs. The proposal would mark the first expansion of the House in more than five decades and could significantly reshape India’s political landscape ahead of future general elections.

Lok Sabha Seats May Rise To 816

Under the reported plan, Lok Sabha strength would increase from 543 to 816 seats. The additional 273 seats would effectively be used to accommodate the one-third women’s quota, allowing the reservation to be rolled out without sharply cutting into the existing seat share of male incumbents. If implemented, the majority mark in the House would also rise accordingly.

Women’s Reservation Plan Linked To New Bills

The move is expected to require at least two bills, including constitutional amendments, to be introduced in Parliament. One bill would address the legal framework needed for seat expansion and delimitation-related changes, while another would be required to formally enable the reservation structure. Because constitutional amendments need two-thirds support in both Houses, the government is said to be reaching out to a wider set of parties for backing.

Political Impact Could Be Significant

If the proposal moves ahead, it could alter the electoral map and change candidate selection across parties in a major way. The expansion would apply to the Lok Sabha, while the strength of the Rajya Sabha and state legislative councils would remain unchanged. The proposal is also politically significant because it would allow the government to project women’s reservation as an immediate reform rather than a delayed promise tied only to a future delimitation exercise.
