Lok Sabha Confirms President’s Rule in Manipur Amid Ongoing Ethnic Violence

The Lok Sabha has officially approved the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur following a statutory resolution. This move comes in the wake of months of unrest and ethnic violence that has plagued the state since 2023. The situation reached a breaking point in February 2025, when Chief Minister N. Biren Singh tendered his resignation, prompting the central government to step in and assume administrative control.

With over 250 lives lost and tens of thousands displaced due to continued clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities, the central government justified the imposition of President’s Rule as necessary to restore law and order in the strife-torn state.

Government and Opposition Views on the Crisis

Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that the violence was largely triggered by a directive from the Manipur High Court, which called for the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe category. This move was perceived by the Kuki community as a direct threat to their constitutional safeguards, leading to widespread protests and violent clashes.

While the opposition supported the resolution in Parliament, it also held the central government accountable for failing to intervene early and manage the situation with sensitivity. Leaders urged the government to take concrete steps toward peacebuilding, rehabilitation of displaced people, and justice for victims of the violence.

Manipur’s Administrative Future Under President’s Rule

Under President’s Rule, the administration of Manipur will now be handled directly by the Governor acting on behalf of the President. The central government is expected to closely monitor developments in the state and explore avenues for political reconciliation.

The situation in Manipur remains tense but stable, with security forces continuing to patrol sensitive areas. Relief efforts for the displaced population are ongoing, and efforts to mediate dialogue between the warring ethnic groups are being pursued.

The imposition of President’s Rule is viewed as a temporary but essential measure aimed at restoring peace and rebuilding administrative trust in a region that has been engulfed in prolonged ethnic strife.
