Lockheed Martin: 96% of C-130J Wings Now Made in India
Lockheed Martin has publicly praised India’s growing defence manufacturing prowess, revealing that 96% of the C-130J Super Hercules aircraft wings are now manufactured in India. This milestone showcases India’s deepening integration into the global aerospace supply chain and marks a major step forward in the country’s self-reliant defence production goals.

The accomplishment stems from the joint venture between Lockheed Martin and Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), operating under Tata Lockheed Martin Aerostructures Limited (TLMAL) in Hyderabad. Since the facility’s inception in 2010, localization levels have steadily increased, reflecting the Indian defence sector’s ability to meet international aerospace quality and precision standards.
The C-130J, a high-performance tactical airlifter, is widely used by the Indian Air Force for diverse missions such as troop deployment, disaster response, and humanitarian operations. India currently operates 12 such aircraft, and the localization of wing production enhances operational preparedness while also fostering domestic expertise in advanced aerostructures and aerospace technology.
Lockheed Martin’s Perspective
Lockheed Martin executives highlighted the critical role of southern India in their supply chain, noting that over 90% of their Indian suppliers are based in the region. Indian MSMEs were applauded for their global competitiveness, reliability, and commitment to high standards.
A company representative emphasized Lockheed Martin’s transition into a high-tech enterprise, integrating next-gen cyber, AI, and 5G systems into platforms like the F-35 and C-130J. The firm’s focus has moved beyond traditional aerospace, evolving into a tech-driven defence powerhouse.
Future of Defence Manufacturing
The decision to produce nearly all of the C-130J wings in India is viewed as a significant endorsement of India’s industrial capabilities and policy direction. The TLMAL facility is now seen as a global center of excellence in wing production, not only serving Indian defence needs but also feeding into Lockheed Martin’s global operations.
This achievement reinforces India’s ambition to become a major defence manufacturing hub and highlights how successful collaborations between international OEMs and Indian firms can drive innovation, create jobs, and bolster national security through self-reliance.
