Local Train Derails at Kalyan Station, No Injuries Reported
A local train derailed at Kalyan station in Thane district, about 60 kilometers from Mumbai, on Friday evening, causing disruptions on the mainline.
The incident occurred around 9:00 pm as the Titwala-CSMT train was entering platform number 2, with one coach going off the track. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, according to Central Railway officials.
Disruption on Mumbai’s Mainline After Derailment
The derailment involved the rear coach of the train, which derailed while the train was moving at a slow speed as it approached the platform. “There is no report of injury to anyone,” said Central Railway chief public relations officer Swapnil Nila, who confirmed that the derailment occurred while the train was slowing down to halt at Kalyan station.
Following the derailment, long-distance train services from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) were disrupted. Four trains departing from CSMT were diverted via the Diwa-Panvel-Pune route, bypassing the Kalyan-Kasara line, as a precaution. Authorities worked quickly to re-rail the coach, with efforts expected to conclude by midnight, after which services would resume once the tracks were deemed safe for operation.
Railway Services Delayed, Commuters Informed
The derailment caused delays on the mainline, prompting a message from Central Railway’s Mumbai division DRM Rajnish Goyal on X, informing passengers of the technical issues affecting services. The initial message, however, drew criticism from commuters, who expressed frustration over the lack of clarity about the derailment in the early communication.
This derailment comes just days after a separate incident at Mumbai Central station, where a train derailed outside the EMU Carshed, leading to the cancellation of several suburban trains. The recent Kalyan incident adds to the challenges faced by the suburban railway network, though swift action by authorities helped minimize the disruption and ensure passenger safety.
As of now, Central Railway has assured commuters that services will be restored as soon as possible, once safety checks are completed.
