Lionel Messi was reportedly the target of multiple serious security threats during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, including alleged bomb plots and an armed attack threat. A leaked police dossier details several incidents investigated by security agencies during the tournament.
Messi Faced World Cup Bomb Threats
One of the most serious incidents reportedly occurred before Argentina’s group-stage match against Jordan in Dallas.
A man allegedly contacted Dallas airport and claimed he and two accomplices were heading towards the stadium carrying homemade explosives and an AR-15 rifle. The threat reportedly mentioned Messi, players from both teams and police officers as potential targets.
Another threat emerged before Argentina faced Egypt in Atlanta, when a social media user allegedly threatened to enter the stadium wearing explosives and attack Messi.
Police Investigated Atlanta Stadium Bomb Alert
Security concerns intensified during the Argentina-Egypt match after police received a separate report claiming three bombs had been placed inside rubbish bins at the stadium.
Bomb disposal specialists, canine units and other security personnel were deployed to search the venue. No successful attack was reported.
The threats were monitored as part of the extensive international security operation established for the World Cup, involving US authorities and law enforcement agencies from participating nations.
Ronaldo and World Cup Officials Also Targeted
Messi was not the only high-profile footballer facing security concerns during the tournament.
Cristiano Ronaldo was reportedly targeted by a suspicious individual seeking information about his accommodation. Police later detained a man at the hotel housing the Portugal squad.
Players including Kylian Mbappe and Alexander Sorloth were also reportedly subjected to threats or harassment, while French referee Francois Letexier allegedly received thousands of threatening messages during the competition.
