Lavrov Meets Kim as North Korea Reaffirms Support for Russia

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Wonsan on July 12. During the meeting, North Korea reaffirmed its “unequivocal support” for Russia’s military operation in Ukraine.

Strengthened Military Ties

Lavrov called their relationship an “invincible fighting brotherhood”, reinforcing the strategic partnership forged during Russian President Putin’s visit to Pyongyang in 2024. He thanked Kim for North Korea’s military assistance, which includes deployment of troops and ammunition to support Russian forces in the Kursk region of Ukraine.

Mutual Defence Pact in Place

The two countries discussed their comprehensive strategic partnership, including a defence pact that obliges mutual assistance if either is attacked. North Korea’s commitment includes supplying approximately 6,000 military engineers and additional troops to Russia, while sending weaponry and ammunition in return.

Regional and Global Implications

Lavrov also warned against any security alliance between the US, Japan, and South Korea aimed at countering North Korea, describing such efforts as destabilising. The visit follows North Korea’s recent deployment of soldiers and heavy equipment to reinforce Russian operations.

Diplomatic & Economic Signals

Lavrov noted potential growth in tourism cooperation, highlighting the new Wonsan-Kalma coastal resort and improved rail links with Russia. He also held talks with North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui during the visit.
