Lavrov Backs India for UNSC Permanent Seat

At the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov publicly endorsed India’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council (UNSC). He argued that the current council structure is outdated and fails to reflect today’s global balance of power.

Call for UNSC Reform

Lavrov emphasized that reforms should include greater representation for Asia, Africa, and Latin America. He stated that India and Brazil are deserving candidates and called for expansion to make the council more democratic.

Critique of Western Dominance

In his address, Lavrov criticized what he termed the dominance of Western powers in global affairs. He warned against unilateral actions by alliances and called for a more equitable global order. He also touched upon conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, urging attention to the rights of all civilians.

India’s Longstanding Aspiration

India has long sought a permanent UNSC seat, citing its large population, economic standing, and contributions in peacekeeping. Some existing UNSC members—including Russia—have previously expressed support for India’s inclusion, though consensus among all members has not been reached.

Lavrov’s remarks signal Russia’s continued alignment with India’s aspirations and add momentum to the push for council reform during this UNGA session.
