Last Cabinet Meeting Signals New Bihar Government Formation

Nitish Kumar, Chief Minister of Bihar, chaired what is described as the final cabinet meeting of his current administration. A resolution is expected to be adopted authorising him to meet the governor, Arif Mohammad Khan, and submit the proposal to dissolve the outgoing assembly. The meeting sets the stage for the formation of the next government after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) won a substantial majority in the recently held state elections.

Election Result and NDA Majority

In the 243-seat Bihar Legislative Assembly, the NDA secured 202 seats collectively. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged with the largest share at 89 seats, followed closely by the JD(U) at 85 seats. The remaining seats were won by alliance partners, including the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) (19 seats) and smaller allies. With this clear majority, the NDA is now preparing for the swearing-in of the new government.

What’s Next

The transition will include submitting resignation for the current ministry and scheduling the oath-taking ceremony for the new government. Although Nitish Kumar is likely to return as Chief Minister for a record 10th term, the formal announcement is expected after consultations among NDA leaders. The ceremony is anticipated to take place on November 20, 2025, at Patna’s historic Gandhi Maidan.
