Ladakh Leader Chering Dorje Lakruk – Article 370 Also Protected Us

Chering Dorje Lakruk, a senior Buddhist leader from Ladakh, has said that while many in the region once criticized Article 370, it also provided vital protections. His remarks come at a time of unrest in Leh and Kargil, where protests have intensified over demands for safeguards.

Remarks on Article 370

Lakruk stated, “We cursed Article 370, but it protected us,” highlighting that the provision, revoked in August 2019, ensured security for land ownership, jobs, and cultural identity. He urged the Centre to keep those protections in mind while framing new laws for Ladakh.

Background & Context

Article 370 granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir before being removed. Initially, Ladakh welcomed its abrogation, expecting direct benefits from Union Territory status. However, local leaders now acknowledge that Article 370 had elements that shielded Ladakh’s people.

Protests & Local Unrest

The region has recently seen violent clashes in Leh, where four people were killed and several injured during demonstrations. Protesters are demanding constitutional guarantees, land safeguards, and stronger job reservations. Authorities have imposed restrictions, while local leaders reject claims of foreign interference.

Political Implications

Lakruk’s comments underline growing calls in Ladakh for constitutional protection. Many argue that future arrangements must preserve land rights and cultural identity, warning that ignoring these concerns could worsen tensions in the sensitive border region.
