Kohli Hails Gill as India’s “Star Boy” After Edgbaston Masterclass
India’s hopes of leveling the Test series received a massive boost as Shubman Gill delivered one of the most dominant individual performances in modern Test history. With twin centuries and a jaw-dropping 430-run match aggregate, Gill has not only broken records but also drawn admiration from one of India’s greatest cricketers—Virat Kohli.
Kohli praises Gill
Virat Kohli, making his first public Test-related post since stepping away from the format, lauded Gill’s brilliance in a heartfelt Instagram story.
“Well played star boy. Rewriting history. Onwards and upwards from here. You deserve all of this.”
The post came moments after Gill’s second century in the match—an aggressive 161 off just 162 balls in the second innings. Kohli’s message reflects not just personal pride, but recognition of a generational shift in India’s Test leadership.
Edgbaston heroics
Gill’s second-innings hundred came after a monumental 269 in the first, making him only the second Indian—after Sunil Gavaskar—to score both a double-century and a century in the same Test. His combined dominance helped India declare at 427 for 6, setting England a near-impossible target of 608. At stumps, England were tottering at 72/3, with India needing just seven wickets to square the series.
His shot selection, game awareness, and timing—particularly under pressure—turned the match into a one-sided affair. While Gill played the anchor, other batters like Rishabh Pant added firepower to extend India’s dominance.
Gill record
With 430 runs across two innings, Gill now owns the second-highest match aggregate in Test cricket history, just behind Graham Gooch’s 456. He also becomes the first Indian to cross the 400-run mark in a single Test, and the only one to do so while leading the side.
Across four innings in the series, Gill has already crossed the 500-run mark, emerging as the series’ top run-getter and stamping his authority as a reliable leader. His leadership, aggressive declarations, and personal form have been central to India’s resurgence in the series.
