KL Rahul To Return As India Captain After Two Years
KL Rahul is set to return as India’s ODI captain for the upcoming three-match series against South Africa beginning November 30. His comeback to leadership comes after nearly two years, prompted by the unavailability of Shubman Gill, who has been ruled out due to a neck injury that requires extended recovery.
Multiple Players Unavailable
Gill’s condition is reportedly more serious than first assessed, and doctors have advised rest. Vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is also unavailable because of a rib-cage injury, leaving the selection committee with limited leadership options. Rahul, who has previously captained India in ODIs and Tests, was chosen as the most experienced interim alternative.
Squad And Selection Updates
The selection update also confirms the return of senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to the ODI squad. Rishabh Pant has been named vice-captain. Selectors are reportedly using this series to test combinations and assess bench strength ahead of major tournaments in 2026. The final squad list is expected to be released shortly.
Series Context
India will play three ODIs in Centurion, Johannesburg and Cape Town. With a mix of returning seniors and interim leadership, the South Africa tour is expected to be a key testing ground for roles, form and team balance heading into the next competitive cycle.
