Kimi Antonelli Becomes Youngest F1 Champion

Italian racing driver Kimi Antonelli has made Formula 1 history by becoming the youngest World Drivers’ Champion at 20 years and 68 days. The Mercedes driver secured his maiden championship after finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday, November 1, 2026, breaking Sebastian Vettel’s long-standing age record and becoming the first Italian to win the title in 73 years.

Antonelli Breaks Sebastian Vettel’s F1 Record

Antonelli entered the Mexican Grand Prix needing only a ninth-place finish to secure the championship, regardless of his closest rivals’ results.

Starting fourth, he delivered a composed performance to finish third behind race winner Max Verstappen and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton.

The result gave Antonelli an unassailable championship lead with four races remaining.

He surpassed Vettel’s previous record, established when the German won his first championship with Red Bull in 2010 at 23.

Mercedes Driver Dominates 2026 Formula 1 Season

Antonelli’s championship triumph came during his second full season with Mercedes, following his promotion to replace Hamilton in 2025.

After finishing seventh in his debut championship, the Italian emerged as the dominant driver in 2026, winning nine races before securing the title.

His performances included a remarkable victory at Monaco, where he became the youngest driver to achieve a Grand Chelem by securing pole position, winning the race and recording the fastest lap while leading throughout.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff’s decision to promote the young driver has been rewarded with a world championship.

Italy Celebrates First F1 Champion Since 1953

Antonelli becomes only the third Italian driver to win Formula 1’s World Drivers’ Championship, joining Giuseppe Farina and Alberto Ascari.

Ascari was the last Italian champion, claiming his second title in 1953.

The Mexico City race also featured a lengthy red-flag interruption following Valtteri Bottas’s accident, before Verstappen secured victory ahead of Hamilton.

Antonelli’s achievement establishes a new milestone for Formula 1 and marks a significant chapter in Mercedes’ racing history.
