Kim Oversees North Korea Rocket Engine Test

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has overseen a ground test of an upgraded high-thrust solid-fuel rocket engine, according to state media, in a move that points to continued efforts to expand the country’s long-range missile capabilities. The latest test is being seen as part of Pyongyang’s broader push to modernise its strategic weapons programme under its current five-year defence plan.

North Korea Tests High-Thrust Rocket Engine

State media said the engine tested was a new solid-fuel model built with composite carbon fibre and capable of generating 2,500 kilonewtons of thrust. Images released after the test showed Kim Jong Un inspecting engine parts and watching the ground firing. The development marks a further advance in North Korea’s effort to improve missile launch readiness and performance.

Solid-Fuel Missile Programme Gains Momentum

Solid-fuel rocket engines are considered significant because they allow missiles to be launched faster and with less preparation than liquid-fuel systems. The reported thrust level is higher than a similar engine test disclosed last year, suggesting progress in power and payload capability. Kim was quoted as saying the new engine aligns with North Korea’s strategy of strengthening and modernising its strategic forces.

Global Missile Range Concerns Grow

Analysts say the higher-thrust engine could support the development of more capable intercontinental ballistic missiles. That has raised concerns that North Korea is working toward systems with longer reach and better chances of penetrating missile defences. The test comes at a time of continued scrutiny over Pyongyang’s military ambitions, especially as it seeks to refine weapons that could extend its strike range far beyond the Korean Peninsula.
