Kim Inspects New Destroyer at Military Expo
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited the Choe Hyon naval destroyer at a defence exhibition, where he called for the navy to be ready to “thoroughly deter or counter and punish the enemy’s provocations.”
Military Showcase and Inspection
The visit was part of the annual Defence Development exhibition in North Korea, which highlights the state’s advances in modern military hardware. During the inspection, Kim toured the ship and reviewed its systems, urging further growth and readiness.
Status and Future Trials
Analysts say the Choe Hyon is still not fully operational, with sea trials possibly imminent after recent installation of engines. The destroyer is believed to be the first 5,000-ton class surface warship built by North Korea, equipped with missile launch systems, phased array radar and modern weaponry.
Strategic Significance
Kim’s visit underscores his push to expand naval capabilities amid regional tensions. The Choe Hyon is seen as a symbol of Pyongyang’s ambitions to project power beyond its immediate coastline. Previous incidents, including a mishap with the second ship in its class (Kang Kon) during launch, had drawn criticism from Kim, who called it a “criminal act.”
Officials expect that future announcements will clarify deployment plans, operational timelines, and additional naval enhancements.
