Kim Calls for Rapid Nuclear Buildup Amid US–South Korea Drills

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un condemned the joint military drills conducted by the United States and South Korea, calling them a “provocative rehearsal for war.” The exercises, known as Ulchi Freedom Shield, began this week and include large-scale defensive training and nuclear response simulations. Kim argued that the maneuvers prove Washington and Seoul’s “hostile intent” toward Pyongyang.

Push for Accelerated Nuclear Expansion

In response, Kim announced plans to rapidly expand North Korea’s nuclear arsenal, saying the scale and focus of the drills demanded stronger deterrence. He emphasized that his country would continue to accelerate weapons development to counter what he views as growing external threats. This push reflects Pyongyang’s long-term goal of enhancing its nuclear strike capability despite international sanctions.

Naval Modernization Underway

Kim also highlighted North Korea’s ongoing naval modernization. A third Choe Hyon-class destroyer is expected to be completed by October next year, strengthening the regime’s nuclear-capable fleet. In addition, Pyongyang is developing new missile systems, including cruise and anti-air weapons, to be deployed on its surface warships. These upgrades underscore the regime’s effort to project strength beyond its land-based arsenal.

Allies Insist Drills Are Defensive

The U.S. and South Korea, however, maintain that the drills are purely defensive. The 11-day Ulchi Freedom Shield is intended to prepare for evolving North Korean threats. Officials noted that 20 of the 40 planned field events have been postponed until September due to extreme heat and efforts to reduce border tensions. South Korean leaders have also sought to revive past inter-Korean military agreements to stabilize the situation.

Rising Regional Tensions

Kim’s remarks and the continuation of large-scale drills highlight the fragile security environment on the Korean Peninsula. With nuclear expansion on one side and joint defense measures on the other, prospects for diplomacy remain uncertain.
