Kerala CM Condemns Attacks on Christmas Celebrations
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has strongly criticised incidents of violence, intimidation, and disruption linked to Christmas celebrations reported from different parts of the country. Speaking on the issue, Vijayan said such acts are deeply disturbing and run contrary to the constitutional values of religious freedom and secularism. He stated that targeting people during religious festivities is an attack on the basic rights guaranteed to citizens.
Reports of Disruptions and Intimidation
The Chief Minister referred to multiple reports of Christmas-related events being disrupted, including carol singing and community gatherings. He said these incidents reflect an increasing intolerance towards religious celebrations and warned that such actions threaten social harmony. Vijayan emphasised that Christmas is a festival that promotes peace, goodwill, and compassion, and attempts to obstruct it undermine the spirit of unity.
Kerala Government’s Stand
Vijayan said the Kerala government would not tolerate any form of religious discrimination or intimidation. Referring to incidents reported within the state, he noted that authorities had acted swiftly and that strict legal action would be taken against those responsible for disrupting celebrations. He reaffirmed Kerala’s commitment to protecting communal harmony and ensuring that people of all faiths can celebrate their festivals without fear.
Call for Upholding Constitutional Values
The Chief Minister called on governments and citizens alike to uphold constitutional principles and resist efforts that promote division. He said safeguarding religious freedom is essential to preserving India’s pluralistic character and warned that silence in the face of such incidents would only embolden those spreading intolerance.
