Karnataka Scraps Land Acquisition Plan Near Bengaluru Airport

The Karnataka government has officially withdrawn its plan to acquire 1,777 acres of agricultural land in Devanahalli taluk near Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport. The move comes after continuous protests from local farmers who opposed giving up their fertile land for the proposed Aerospace and Defence Park project.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah acknowledged the farmers’ long-standing resistance and described the agitation as one of the most significant people’s movements in the state in recent years. He stated that while development is important, it should not come at the cost of farmers’ livelihoods.

Instead of compulsory acquisition, the government will now proceed with a voluntary model. Only farmers who are willing to give up their land will be considered, and they will be offered higher-than-market compensation packages. Farmers who choose not to sell their land will be allowed to continue farming without any pressure from the state.

The Devanahalli area had been identified as a strategic location for aerospace investments due to its proximity to the international airport and connectivity to industrial corridors. Karnataka contributes over 60% of India’s aerospace production, making the area crucial for the state’s industrial vision. However, the government emphasized that industrial progress must go hand in hand with social justice and farmers’ welfare.

The decision has been welcomed by local farmers and civil society groups. Several public figures also supported the move, calling it a step towards ethical and inclusive governance. The government is now exploring alternative locations or voluntary land contributions to continue with its industrial plans without disrupting farming communities.
