Karnataka CM Allocates Development Funds to Legislators

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has approved the release of ₹50 crore in development grants for each MLA, aiming to boost constituency-level infrastructure and local welfare projects. The allocation is part of the Chief Minister’s Infrastructure Development Programme and is based on budgetary provisions announced earlier this year.

Breakdown of Fund Utilisation

Each legislator will receive ₹37.5 crore specifically for public works such as roads, drains, streetlights, and civic infrastructure. The remaining ₹12.5 crore can be used for other approved local development needs based on the requirements of each constituency.

The government has instructed all MLAs to prepare project proposals and submit them during constituency-wise review meetings scheduled for July 30 and 31 at Vidhan Soudha in Bengaluru.

Opposition Flags Unequal Distribution

While the funding applies to all 224 MLAs, opposition leaders have alleged that non-Congress MLAs might receive a reduced amount of ₹25 crore instead of the full ₹50 crore. Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka raised concerns about fairness and demanded that funds be released equally to every legislator, regardless of party affiliation.

The government has not issued an official clarification regarding this discrepancy.

Demand for Rural Focus

Independent MLA Darshan Puttannaiah has urged the government to prioritise rural infrastructure. He stated that several villages in his constituency lack even basic facilities and would need ₹5–10 crore just for roads and drainage. He also called on the government to ensure that funds are not spent solely on urban beautification.

Political Significance Ahead of Local Polls

The timing of this fund release is being seen as politically significant, with urban and rural body elections approaching in the state. The move is expected to placate legislators and accelerate stalled projects. However, political analysts caution that the government must maintain transparency and equal access to avoid allegations of bias.

The July-end meetings are likely to finalise fund allocation per constituency based on approved projects and departmental readiness.
