Karnataka Caps Movie Tickets at ₹200
The Karnataka government has decided to cap cinema ticket prices at ₹200 (excluding taxes) across all theatres, including multiplexes. The move comes through the newly amended Karnataka Cinemas (Regulation) Amendment Rules, 2025.
Exemptions for Premium Small Screens
The rule exempts premium multi-screen theatres with 75 seats or fewer, allowing them to charge above the ₹200 limit. This exemption is aimed at supporting luxury cinema formats that operate on smaller scales.
Legal Framework and Enforcement
The cap has been notified under Section 19 of the Karnataka Cinema (Control) Act, 1964. It will come into force once it is officially published in the state Gazette.
Audience and Industry Impact
The government stated the cap is intended to make theatre visits more affordable and boost footfalls, particularly for regional films. Stakeholders in the industry had long pushed for such a measure to balance affordability with revenues.
