Kandla-Bound Cargo Ship Catches Fire In Gulf

A Thai-flagged cargo ship bound for Kandla port in Gujarat caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz after coming under attack during escalating tensions in the Gulf, with 20 crew members rescued and three reported missing. The vessel, identified as Mayuree Naree, was travelling from the United Arab Emirates to India when the incident took place, adding to growing concerns over the safety of commercial shipping in the region.

Kandla-Bound Ship Hit In Strait Of Hormuz

The attack happened as the ship moved through one of the world’s most sensitive maritime corridors, where conflict-linked threats have sharply increased in recent days. Reports said the vessel was struck by projectiles, triggering a fire on board and forcing the crew to abandon ship. The incident did not involve an Indian-flagged vessel, but its destination was Kandla, making it a matter of concern for Indian authorities and trade watchers.

Rescue Operation After Cargo Ship Fire

Out of the 23 people on board, 20 were rescued after escaping in lifeboats, while three crew members remain missing. Rescue efforts were carried out with assistance from regional authorities, and the missing sailors are feared to be trapped in the damaged section of the vessel. Visuals released after the incident showed heavy smoke rising from the ship as emergency response teams moved in to contain the situation.

India Reacts To Gulf Shipping Attack

India has deplored the attack on the Kandla-bound vessel and said commercial shipping should not become a target in a conflict zone. The episode has once again highlighted the risks faced by merchant vessels passing through the Strait of Hormuz, a route critical for global energy and cargo movement. With regional hostilities intensifying, the attack is likely to raise further alarm among shipping operators, insurers and governments monitoring trade flows through the Gulf.
