Kamal Haasan Takes Oath in Tamil as Rajya Sabha MP
Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) chief and veteran actor Kamal Haasan was sworn in as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha on July 25, taking his oath in Tamil. His use of the Tamil language in the Upper House received warm applause and table-thumping from fellow members, marking a proud moment for the Tamil-speaking community.
Elected Unopposed with Alliance Support
Haasan was elected to the Rajya Sabha unopposed with the backing of the DMK-led INDIA alliance from Tamil Nadu. The seat was vacated by DMK leader Kanimozhi, who moved to the Lok Sabha after winning from Thoothukudi in the 2024 general elections. Haasan’s nomination was part of a political understanding between MNM and DMK, despite MNM not contesting the Lok Sabha polls directly.
Political Transition from Screen to Parliament
Kamal Haasan’s formal entry into Parliament marks a significant transition from his career in cinema to national politics. Since founding MNM in 2018, Haasan has positioned himself as a reform-oriented leader, focusing on governance, transparency, and civic engagement. His presence in the Rajya Sabha is expected to amplify discussions on Tamil identity, federalism, and language rights.
Symbolism in Taking the Oath
Taking the oath in Tamil was seen not just as a personal statement but also as a symbolic assertion of linguistic pride. It resonated strongly with his political base in Tamil Nadu, a state known for its consistent opposition to Hindi imposition and for preserving regional identity.
Looking Ahead
Haasan will serve as a Rajya Sabha MP until July 2031. His role in Parliament is anticipated to focus on issues related to cultural preservation, governance reforms, and social justice. His entry has also stirred interest in whether he will use his national platform to revive MNM’s electoral fortunes in the state.
