Kamal Haasan Gets Interim Relief From Madras High Court
The Madras High Court has granted interim relief to actor and Rajya Sabha MP Kamal Haasan in a lawsuit seeking protection of his personality rights. The court restrained individuals and entities from unauthorised commercial use of his name, image, likeness, voice, or other identifiable attributes without his consent.
Court’s Interim Order
The court observed that Kamal Haasan had established a prima facie case and noted the risk of misuse of his public persona, especially through digital platforms. The interim order bars the creation, circulation, or sale of products, digital content, or promotional material that falsely associates him with goods or services.
However, the court clarified that the order does not restrict lawful activities such as news reporting, criticism, parody, satire, or other forms of protected expression.
Background of the Case
Kamal Haasan moved the court citing concerns over increasing unauthorised use of his identity, including through manipulated images and technology-driven content. He argued that such misuse could mislead the public and cause reputational harm.
The matter will be heard again at a later date, with the interim protection remaining in force until further orders.
