Justice Gavai Advocates Constitutional Solutions for Manipur’s Challenges
Supreme Court Justice B.R. Gavai has stressed that the ongoing crisis in Manipur can be resolved through constitutional means and peaceful dialogue. Speaking at the 12th anniversary celebration of the Manipur High Court, Justice Gavai expressed confidence that the combined efforts of the executive, legislature, and judiciary can help restore peace and normalcy in the violence-affected state.
Justice Gavai highlighted that the Constitution has been the binding force that has held the nation together for more than 75 years, and it provides the necessary framework to address any internal challenges, including those currently faced by Manipur.
Judiciary Engages with Affected Communities
Leading a team of five Supreme Court judges, Justice Gavai visited relief camps in Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts, where he met members of both the Kuki and Meitei communities. These groups have been deeply affected by the ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023. During his interaction, he noted a shared sentiment among the displaced people — a strong desire to return to their homes and rebuild their lives.
Justice Gavai emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue, stating that genuine peace and reconciliation could only be achieved through mutual understanding and constitutional engagement.
Support from Government and Judicial Infrastructure Boost
Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, also attended the event and voiced his hope that the peace process in Manipur would progress rapidly. He affirmed that once peace is restored, Manipur would continue to play a vital role in India’s overall development journey.
Further signaling a long-term commitment to the region, the foundation stone for a new district and sessions court building was laid in Churachandpur. Additionally, new posts in the Chief Justice Secretariat were announced to strengthen judicial capacity in the state.
A Call for Unity and Legal Resolution
Justice Gavai’s remarks served as a timely reminder that India’s Constitution provides peaceful and democratic solutions to even the most complex societal issues. By reinforcing the rule of law, encouraging dialogue, and enhancing judicial infrastructure, the judiciary aims to support Manipur’s return to peace and stability.
His message was clear — the road to reconciliation lies not in conflict, but in unity, trust, and a shared commitment to constitutional values.
