JNU Protest Escalates, 50 Students Detained

Tensions escalated at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi as a student-led protest march resulted in clashes with police and the detention of more than 50 students. The confrontation followed a call by student groups to march towards the Ministry of Education, leading to heavy police deployment outside the campus.

JNU Protest March and Police Deployment

Members of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union organised a protest march raising concerns over administrative and policy-related issues within the university. Authorities said no permission had been granted for a march beyond campus limits. In anticipation of the demonstration, Delhi Police personnel were deployed in significant numbers around the main gate, with barricades erected to prevent the gathering from moving towards central Delhi.

As protesters attempted to proceed past the barricades, a confrontation broke out between students and security personnel. Witnesses reported pushing and scuffles as police sought to disperse the crowd and restore order.

Over 50 Students Detained After Clashes

Police confirmed that more than 50 students were detained during the protest. Several student leaders were among those taken into custody. Officials stated that action was taken after protesters allegedly attempted to breach barricades and defied instructions to disperse. Some students sustained minor injuries during the incident, while police personnel also reported injuries.

Campus Tensions and Administrative Response

The incident has intensified tensions on campus, with student bodies criticising the police action and demanding the immediate release of those detained. Authorities maintained that law and order had to be preserved and said the situation was brought under control after the detentions.

The episode highlights continuing disagreements between sections of the student community and the university administration, with further developments expected as discussions continue.
