J&K Police Station Blast Kills Nine, Injures Dozens

A late-night explosion at the Nowgam Police Station in Srinagar on Friday killed nine people and injured more than 27, according to updated official assessments. Police and forensic teams were examining explosives that had been seized earlier from a terror-linked case in Faridabad, when the material accidentally detonated.

How the Blast Occurred

Investigators confirmed that the explosives were being inspected inside the station premises when an unexpected ignition triggered a powerful blast. The explosion tore through multiple rooms, damaged nearby structures, and set several vehicles in the compound on fire. Some of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.

Official Response

Jammu and Kashmir Police chief Nalin Prabhat stated that no terror angle has emerged so far and the incident appears accidental. A detailed inquiry has been initiated to review the procedures followed while storing and handling the seized explosives. Senior officials also inspected the site to assess structural damage and support ongoing rescue efforts.

Impact and Next Steps

The J&K administration is expected to announce compensation for the victims. Authorities are now focusing on identifying possible lapses in safety protocols and ensuring compliance with explosive-handling guidelines to prevent such incidents in the future.
