J&K Cabinet Passes Resolution to Restore Statehood

The Jammu and Kashmir Cabinet, under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, has passed a significant resolution calling for the restoration of statehood to the Union Territory. According to official sources quoted by news agency IANS, this decision was made during the first cabinet meeting on Thursday.

The meeting, chaired by Omar Abdullah, was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary and several other cabinet ministers, including Sakeena Masood Itoo, Javed Ahmad Rana, Javaid Ahmad Dar, and Satish Sharma. The resolution, which calls for Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood to be reinstated, marks an important step in the region’s political landscape.

Resolution to Be Presented to PM Modi

Sources have revealed that the draft of the resolution has already been prepared, and Chief Minister Abdullah is expected to travel to New Delhi in the coming days to personally present it to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The resolution seeks to urge the central government to restore Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, a demand that has been gaining momentum in recent years following the bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories in August 2019.

Opposition Voices Criticism

However, the move has sparked criticism from other political factions. Waheed Para, a member of Mehbooba Mufti’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP), took to X to express his discontent, referring to the resolution as a “ratification” of the August 5, 2019 decision that led to the abrogation of Article 370. Para highlighted that the resolution focuses solely on statehood and does not address the reinstatement of Article 370, which he sees as a setback, especially after political promises made during elections.

The statehood resolution is expected to play a pivotal role in Jammu and Kashmir’s ongoing political discourse, with its future now resting on the response of the central government.
