Japan’s LDP and Ishin Agree to Form Coalition

Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and the Japan Innovation Party (Ishin) have agreed to form a coalition government, paving the way for LDP leader Sanae Takaichi to become the country’s first female prime minister.

Support in Parliamentary Vote

As part of the arrangement, Ishin will back Takaichi in the upcoming parliamentary vote but will not immediately seek cabinet posts. The deal comes after the LDP’s long-time ally Komeito ended its 26-year partnership earlier this month, leaving the ruling party without a majority on its own.

Policy Concessions

Reports indicate that Ishin secured commitments on tax relief for food items and reforms to campaign donation laws, which align with its policy agenda. These concessions were central to finalising the coalition agreement.

Next Steps

The formal coalition pact is expected to be signed shortly. Takaichi’s formal nomination as prime minister is likely next week, marking a historic first for Japan.
