Japan Will Not Recognise Palestine State for Now

Japan has decided not to recognize the State of Palestine at this time, citing concerns about timing and international alignment. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba will also skip a meeting on the two-state solution at this month’s UN General Assembly.

Contrast with Other Countries

Countries such as France, Britain, Canada, and Australia have moved toward recognising a Palestinian state at the upcoming UN session. Japan’s stance places it more in line with the United States and Israel, which continue to reject immediate recognition.

Reasoning Behind the Decision

Japan says it is “conducting a comprehensive assessment, including appropriate timing and modalities, of the issue of recognising Palestinian statehood,” indicating that recognition is being considered but will depend on how conditions evolve.
