Japan Issues Tsunami Advisory After Strong Quake

A 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Aomori Prefecture on Friday morning, sending strong tremors across northeastern Japan. The quake, recorded at a depth of about 20 kilometres, was felt in nearby regions including Iwate and Miyagi. Soon after the tremors, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory for the Pacific coastline.

Tsunami Advisory for Northern Coast

Authorities warned that tsunami waves up to one metre high could reach coastal areas. Residents were urged to stay away from the shoreline, move to higher ground if necessary and follow instructions from local officials. As of early reports, there were no confirmed casualties or major damage, but emergency teams remained on alert.

Follows Earlier Major Earthquake

The incident comes just days after a powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit the same region on December 8. That earlier quake triggered widespread tsunami warnings, caused minor structural damage and injured several people. Small tsunami waves were recorded before the advisory was lifted.

Region on High Alert

Japan’s northeast continues to face frequent seismic activity, and officials have asked residents to remain prepared for possible aftershocks. Local authorities emphasised the need for caution, emergency preparedness and close monitoring of official updates.
