Jalandhar Hospital Oxygen Glitch Linked to Three Patient Deaths

On the evening of Sunday, July 27, three critically ill patients on ventilator support at the Trauma Centre of Jalandhar Civil Hospital died within about 35 minutes. Hospital authorities confirmed a brief drop in oxygen pressure took place around 7:15–7:50 PM during a planned supply changeover. The patients, already in serious condition, were unable to survive despite backup oxygen being activated swiftly.

Patient Details and Circumstances

The deceased included a 15-year-old snake‑bite patient, a man treated for drug overdose, and a patient with tuberculosis-related lung disease. All three were on ventilators when the oxygen pressure dipped. Hospital records indicate their deaths occurred minutes apart after the disruption.

Hospital Response and Probe Initiated

Medical officials stated that an oil leak caused the oxygen plant malfunction. Backup cylinders were engaged immediately, and the fault was fixed within minutes. However, hospital staff emphasized that each patient’s critical condition was a major factor in the outcome. A nine-member inquiry committee has been formed to investigate and submit a report within 48 hours. If negligence is found, those responsible will face action.

Families and Political Reaction

Relatives of the deceased blamed hospital negligence for the deaths, saying the sudden stoppage of oxygen supply caused their loved ones to deteriorate. Meanwhile, Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh and the Deputy Commissioner visited the hospital, assuring public that officials from Chandigarh are involved in the investigation. BJP leaders criticized the state government over lapses in health infrastructure and demanded accountability.

Broader Issues and Safety Concerns

This incident underscores potential vulnerabilities in hospital oxygen systems, particularly in critical care units. Experts caution that even brief disruptions can become fatal when systems lack redundancy or fail under pressure. The inquiry report is expected to highlight technical lapses and recommend improvements to prevent such tragedies in the future.
