Jaishankar to Visit Russia for Talks on August 21

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will travel to Moscow on August 21 for talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The visit follows National Security Advisor Ajit Doval’s recent trip to Russia and comes ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s anticipated visit to India later this year.

Strategic Partnership Amid U.S. Tensions

The trip highlights India’s continued engagement with Russia despite mounting U.S. trade pressures, including increased tariffs of up to 50 percent on certain Indian exports in response to India’s ongoing crude oil imports from Russia. Discussions in Moscow are expected to focus on trade, energy cooperation, defense ties, and regional security issues.

Diplomatic Coordination Ahead of Summit

The meeting is also aimed at advancing preparations for upcoming high-level engagements, including a potential presidential summit. Officials view the visit as part of India’s broader strategy to maintain balanced foreign relations while safeguarding strategic autonomy in the face of shifting global alignments.
