Jaishankar Says Europe Can’t Mirror India-Iran Ties

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has said Europe cannot simply replicate India’s relationship with Iran, stressing that New Delhi’s engagement with Tehran is shaped by its own history, interests and regional context. His remarks come as several countries explore ways to secure commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz amid continued instability in West Asia.

Jaishankar Says India Iran Ties Are Unique

Jaishankar said every country’s relationship with Iran stands on its own merits, making direct comparison difficult. He indicated that India’s approach has developed over time through a specific diplomatic and strategic context that may not be easily reproduced by European capitals. At the same time, he said India would be open to sharing its engagement model and diplomatic experience with countries trying to understand how New Delhi manages ties with Tehran.

India Iran Talks Focus On Hormuz Shipping

The remarks come as India remains in discussions with Iran on restoring safer movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor for global oil and gas trade. Jaishankar said the discussions have shown some progress, but clarified that there is no blanket arrangement in place for Indian-flagged vessels. Instead, the handling of ship movement is being managed on a case-by-case basis as the regional security situation continues to evolve.

West Asia Diplomacy Gains Urgency For India

India has stepped up diplomatic outreach in recent days as tensions in West Asia affect shipping, energy flows and broader regional stability. Jaishankar has been in touch with counterparts from key countries including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Russia, Germany, South Korea and Iran. His latest remarks underline India’s attempt to protect its commercial interests while maintaining a balanced diplomatic position during a period of growing regional uncertainty.
