Jaishankar Pushes for India’s Permanent Seat at UN, Reaffirms Modi’s No-War Message

External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar reiterated India’s call for a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council, emphasizing the need for reform in global institutions to create a more equitable world order.

Speaking at the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, Dr. Jaishankar also echoed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message that this is “not an era of war” and stressed the importance of resolving global conflicts through dialogue and diplomacy.

India’s Push for UN Security Council Reform

Highlighting the inequalities in access to developmental resources and modern technologies, Dr. Jaishankar argued for the reform of established institutions like the UN Security Council. He stated that expanding independent platforms like BRICS is essential to address the growing concerns of the Global South, particularly in areas such as health, food, and fuel security. “The benefits of globalisation have been very uneven,” he noted, adding that the COVID-19 pandemic and global conflicts have exacerbated these challenges.

India’s demand for a permanent seat at the UN Security Council, supported by major powers like the US, UK, and France, has been a long-standing objective. Jaishankar emphasized that reforming outdated mechanisms is crucial to ensuring a more democratic global governance structure.

A More Equitable Global Order for the Global South

Dr. Jaishankar outlined five key steps to create a more balanced global order: expanding independent platforms like BRICS, reforming multilateral institutions, creating regional production hubs to diversify supply chains, correcting colonial-era global infrastructure distortions, and sharing new initiatives like India’s Digital Public Infrastructure and Unified Payment Interface.

He also stressed the need for collective action to enhance connectivity, logistics, and respect for territorial integrity, noting that India has already initiated several global alliances, including the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.

Addressing Global Conflicts and Promoting Peace

Addressing the ongoing conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine, Dr. Jaishankar reiterated Prime Minister Modi’s stance on resolving disputes through diplomacy, calling for respect for international law and zero tolerance for terrorism. He expressed concern over the potential escalation of conflicts in the Middle East, emphasizing the need for a fair, durable solution that leads to a two-state resolution for Palestine.
