Jaishankar Meets Putin, India Highlights Anti-Terror Stance

S. Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister, met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on 18 November 2025 during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of Government meeting. During the call, Jaishankar conveyed greetings from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and underlined the enduring strategic relationship between India and Russia.

Emphasis on Terrorism and Global Challenges

In his address at the SCO gathering, Jaishankar stressed that terrorism cannot be justified, ignored or white-washed. He reiterated India’s right to defend its citizens against hostile actions. The minister also referenced global economic instability and called for structural reforms in multilateral institutions to enhance cooperation among member states.

India-Russia Ties and Next Steps

The meeting signals a reaffirmation of the India-Russia strategic partnership, especially in the areas of defence, energy and diplomacy. While no major new deal was announced publicly, the interaction sets the stage for a forthcoming India-Russia summit in India in December 2025. Observers say the focus will be on deepening trade ties, enhancing defence collaboration and aligning on regional security concerns.
