Jaishankar Meets Putin in Moscow Amid US Tariff Pressure

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin during his three-day visit to Moscow. The talks came after his meeting with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, where both sides discussed strengthening bilateral ties. The visit is seen as crucial as India faces economic pressure from heavy U.S. tariffs linked to its energy trade with Russia.

Focus on Energy and Trade

Energy cooperation dominated the discussions, with Russia reaffirming its commitment to continuing oil supplies to India. Moscow also expressed interest in joint energy projects, particularly in the Russian Far East and Arctic. Jaishankar, while acknowledging the significance of these ties, emphasized the need for India to boost exports of pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and textiles to balance the rising trade deficit caused by oil imports.

Strategic Diplomatic Messaging

Both leaders highlighted the resilience of India–Russia ties, describing them as one of the “steadiest” relationships in global diplomacy since World War II. Despite shifting geopolitical alignments, both countries reiterated their long-term strategic partnership, projecting unity against external pressures.

Next Steps and Outlook

The meeting lays the groundwork for the upcoming Annual Leaders’ Summit, where more concrete agreements on trade and strategic cooperation are expected. India and Russia also indicated plans to reduce regulatory hurdles and ease non-tariff barriers to encourage smoother trade.
