Jaishankar Criticizes Trump, Reaffirms India’s Red Lines
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said U.S. President Donald Trump’s approach to diplomacy was unlike any other, pointing out that he conducts foreign policy “very publicly and very unsparingly.” Speaking at an event in Delhi, Jaishankar observed that this was the first time a U.S. president had handled sensitive matters in such an open style.
No Mediation on Pakistan
Jaishankar underlined that India has maintained a clear national consensus for over five decades against any foreign mediation in its relations with Pakistan. He said that no matter what pressure comes from outside, India will never compromise on this position. According to him, sovereignty over bilateral issues remains a red line that cannot be crossed.
Protecting Farmers and Strategic Autonomy
Responding to U.S. tariff demands, Jaishankar listed India’s “red lines,” including the protection of farmers, preserving strategic autonomy, and resisting external interference in policy matters. He stressed that these priorities are non-negotiable and reflect the expectations of the Indian people.
Response on Oil Trade with Russia
Addressing criticism of India’s purchase of Russian crude oil and refined products, Jaishankar hit back sharply. He said it was ironic for a pro-business U.S. administration to lecture India on trade practices. His comment, “If you don’t like it, don’t buy it,” directly responded to American complaints about India’s energy ties with Moscow.
Trade Negotiations Still On
Despite tensions, including the cancellation of a planned U.S. trade delegation visit, Jaishankar confirmed that talks between India and the United States are ongoing. He emphasized that dialogue continues, even though both sides have disagreements over tariffs and trade policy.
