External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with fishermen from Tamil Nadu, assuring them of the government’s commitment to addressing their concerns, including consular support in cases involving detentions abroad. The meeting focused on the long-standing challenges faced by Indian fishermen, particularly those arrested in international waters, and emphasized the government’s proactive approach in resolving their issues.

Jaishankar Pledges Government Support

During the interaction, Jaishankar reassured the fishermen that their concerns were being taken seriously and that the government was committed to providing necessary diplomatic and legal assistance. He stated, “The Government of India is fully committed to supporting our fishermen. We are actively working to address consular and legal challenges they face, particularly in cases of detentions.”

The fishermen expressed their concerns over frequent arrests by foreign authorities, particularly in Sri Lankan waters. They sought stronger diplomatic intervention to secure their release and ensure their safety while fishing in disputed areas.

Frequent Arrests and Diplomatic Challenges

Indian fishermen, especially from Tamil Nadu, have frequently faced detentions by Sri Lankan authorities for allegedly crossing into their territorial waters. This has been a contentious issue between India and Sri Lanka, with repeated calls for diplomatic resolutions and a clear demarcation of fishing boundaries.

The meeting with Jaishankar highlighted the need for stronger bilateral discussions with neighboring countries to safeguard the livelihoods of Indian fishermen. The minister assured that the government was in constant dialogue with Sri Lankan authorities and other stakeholders to prevent such incidents and secure the timely release of detained fishermen.

Government’s Efforts in Resolving Fishermen’s Issues

Jaishankar emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of Indian fishermen through diplomatic efforts and legal aid. He highlighted past instances where the government successfully intervened to bring back detained fishermen and reiterated that these efforts would continue.

With ongoing concerns about maritime boundaries and international fishing rights, the central government is actively working on measures to protect Indian fishermen and prevent conflicts. As diplomatic engagements continue, the fishermen remain hopeful for long-term solutions that will allow them to carry out their livelihood without fear of arrests.
