Italian PM Criticises US Tariff Threat on Greenland Dispute

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has described the United States’ threatened tariffs on several European countries over the Greenland dispute as a “mistake”. She made the remarks during a visit to South Korea, saying that imposing tariffs in this context could harm transatlantic relations.

US Tariff Plan and European Reaction

The U.S. administration has said it will impose a 10 per cent tariff from February 1 on goods from nations resisting its stance on Greenland, and could raise the levy to 25 per cent by June unless a diplomatic solution is reached. European leaders have strongly opposed the threat, warning that such economic measures could strain NATO unity and international cooperation. Several European governments have held talks to coordinate responses and emphasised that Greenland’s sovereignty belongs to Denmark and its people.

Meloni’s Call for Dialogue

Meloni urged renewed dialogue between the United States and European partners to de-escalate the situation. She stressed the importance of respecting international law and avoiding punitive trade actions amid disagreements on Arctic security and regional policy.
