ISRO Successfully Completes SpaDeX Satellite De-Docking

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has achieved a significant milestone with the successful de-docking of its Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) satellites, marking a crucial step in India’s progress toward autonomous space operations.

SpaDeX Mission and Objectives

The SpaDeX mission, launched on December 30, 2024, from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, was designed to test and validate autonomous docking technology. The mission involved two 220-kilogram satellites—SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target)—that were placed in a 475-kilometer orbit at a 55-degree inclination.

After a successful docking on January 16, 2025, the two satellites remained in an integrated state before executing their de-docking sequence. The mission aims to enhance India’s space station capabilities, satellite servicing, and crewed spaceflight programs.

Successful De-Docking Execution

On March 13, 2025, ISRO confirmed that the de-docking sequence was successfully completed, marking a major breakthrough in autonomous space docking technology. The process involved:

  • Extending the capture lever of SDX-2 to initiate separation.
  • Releasing the capture mechanism as per the planned sequence.
  • Issuing de-capture commands to ensure safe disengagement.

This carefully controlled maneuver ensures that both satellites can function independently, setting the foundation for future space docking missions.

The success of the SpaDeX mission holds strategic importance for India’s space exploration ambitions:

  • Supports India’s Space Station Plan: The technology demonstrated will be instrumental in the Bharatiya Antariksha Station, India’s proposed independent space station.
