Israeli Strikes Target Iranian Defense Systems and IRGC Bases: NYT
Israeli airstrikes early Friday reportedly hit key Iranian defense installations, including the S-300 air defense system at Imam Khomeini International Airport near Tehran, according to Iranian officials quoted by The New York Times.
The strikes targeted the Russian-made defense system, which was critical in securing Iranian airspace around key infrastructure. Israel had previously targeted an S-300 system near Iran’s Natanz nuclear site in April 2024.
IRGC Missile Bases and Parchin Military Complex Also Targeted
In addition to the S-300 system, at least three missile bases operated by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) were hit during the strikes, according to the unnamed Iranian officials. Israeli drones also targeted the secretive Parchin military base, located on the outskirts of Tehran. One drone reportedly hit the base, while others were downed before reaching their targets.
Parchin Complex and Ongoing Tensions
The Parchin complex, known for its defense and nuclear-related activities, has been a site of previous attacks. In 2022, a drone strike on the facility killed an Iranian engineer. This latest escalation highlights the continuing tensions between Israel and Iran, as Israel persistently targets Iran’s military and nuclear infrastructure.
