Israel Strikes Syria Military HQ Over Druze Clashes

On July 16, Israel carried out a series of airstrikes against the Syrian military headquarters near the presidential palace in Damascus. This action was taken after Israel had warned the Syrian army to withdraw forces from the Druze-majority region of Suwayda in southern Syria.

Response to Suwayda Conflict

The strikes follow a breakdown in a ceasefire between Syrian government forces and local Druze militias, which resulted in 248 deaths in the region. Israel’s leadership stated the intervention was intended to protect the Druze community in Suwayda, citing shared cultural ties and concerns over civilian safety.

Drone Attack at Military Gate

Israeli drones targeted the main entrance of Syria’s Defence Ministry complex in Damascus, followed by a larger strike on the main building several hours later. Initial reports indicate at least one military official and some civilians sustained injuries.

Israel’s Warning of Further Action

Israeli officials stated that more “painful blows” will follow if Syrian forces do not withdraw from Druze areas. The strikes demonstrate an escalation in Israel’s direct military involvement in Syria, highlighting its determination to intervene when minority communities are threatened.

Regional Tensions Rise

The incident heightens instability in Syria and the wider Middle East. Fighting between Druze groups and Syrian regime forces continues near Suwayda, raising concerns over displacement and civilian harm. Regional and international bodies have called for urgent restraint and dialogue to protect communities and pursue a peaceful resolution.
