Israel Names Roman Gofman As New Mossad Chief

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has appointed Roman Gofman as the next Director of Mossad, Israel’s foreign intelligence agency. Gofman will take over from David Barnea when Barnea’s term ends in June 2026. The appointment was announced as Israel continues to deal with security challenges in the region.

Military Background, Not Intelligence

Gofman currently serves as Netanyahu’s military secretary and is a senior officer in the Israeli Defence Forces. He has held command positions for many years, including during the conflicts that followed the 2023 attacks. Unlike most previous Mossad chiefs, he has not come from within the intelligence community. His career has been rooted in military operations rather than covert intelligence work.

Debate Over The Choice

Supporters of the decision say Gofman’s operational experience and wartime leadership could bring a different perspective to Mossad at a time of ongoing threats. The government described him as highly capable and familiar with defence and security coordination. Critics, however, have questioned the lack of direct intelligence background, noting that Mossad leadership traditionally rises from inside the agency.

Transition Ahead

A handover period will take place before the change in June 2026. Gofman will continue in his current position while preparing to lead one of the world’s most high-profile intelligence organisations. Analysts will watch for how his leadership style and priorities shape Mossad’s future operations.
