Israel Launches Airstrikes in Rafah Amid Fragile Truce

Israeli forces carried out airstrikes in the southern Gaza city of Rafah on Sunday. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the strikes targeted tunnels and military infrastructure after its troops came under fire in the area.

Ceasefire under strain

The strikes occurred despite a U.S.-brokered ceasefire that began earlier in October. Israel claimed Hamas militants had fired anti-tank missiles and small arms at its forces, prompting the retaliatory action. Hamas, however, denied responsibility and said it had no active units in Rafah.

Civilian impact and casualties

Gaza’s health authorities reported civilian casualties, though figures remain disputed. Local reports highlighted that residential areas near Rafah crossing were also affected, raising concerns over disruptions to humanitarian aid deliveries.

Warnings from Israel

Israeli officials stated that they had maintained the ceasefire until provoked and warned that further violations would trigger a stronger response. They also stressed that protecting border security remained a priority.

Humanitarian concerns

The renewed hostilities have raised fresh concerns over aid and supplies entering Gaza through Rafah. Relief agencies fear the fragile truce could collapse if both sides continue trading accusations and attacks.
