Israel Accuses Pakistan at UN Over Bin Laden

At a United Nations Security Council session, Israel sharply criticised Pakistan, saying Islamabad cannot deny that Osama bin Laden was killed on Pakistani soil. The Israeli representative accused Pakistan of sheltering bin Laden and drew parallels with what Israel characterises as double standards in global counterterrorism.

Claims Made by Israel

Israel’s UN ambassador said bin Laden was sheltered in Pakistan and that the US operation which killed him in Abbottabad in May 2011 took place on Pakistani territory. He urged that questions must be asked about the sheltering of terrorists.

Pakistan’s Response

Pakistan’s envoy rejected the accusations. He called the statements baseless and argued that Israel is trying to use the UN forum to deflect criticism of its own actions.

Context of the Debate

The exchange took place amid debates over an Israeli attack targeting Hamas leaders in Doha. Israel’s remarks brought attention back to bin Laden’s killing, first confirmed by the US in 2011, and to long-standing tensions over Pakistan’s role in counterterrorism.
