Iran’s Khamenei Warns US Over Possible Attack
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned the United States and its allies of a regional war if Iran is attacked, saying any military strike would lead to widespread conflict across the Middle East. He made the remarks in a speech marking the anniversary of the 1979 Iranian Revolution.
Threat of Wider Conflict
Khamenei said that an attack on Iran would not be “limited” and would pull in neighbouring countries, intensifying instability across the region. He emphasised that Iran’s military and allied forces are prepared to respond to any aggression.
Context of Tensions
Tensions between Iran and the US have been high following the US designation of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation by the European Union, and continued disputes over Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions. Iran has repeatedly rejected calls to curtail its nuclear activities and has insisted its programme is for peaceful purposes.
International Reactions
Global leaders have urged restraint and diplomatic engagement to avoid escalation. The United Nations and several countries have stressed the importance of dialogue, warning that military confrontation could have serious humanitarian and economic consequences.
