Iran Urges UN to Act After Trump Threats
Tehran has formally urged the United Nations to respond to what it describes as “reckless and provocative” threats from Donald Trump amid ongoing unrest across Iran. The appeal was made in a letter from Iran’s ambassador to the UN to the UN secretary-general and the Security Council, calling on the international body to condemn the statements and uphold respect for Iran’s sovereignty.
Rising Protests and US Warning
Mass protests have spread across Iran in recent days, sparked by economic hardship, a sharp fall in the value of the Iran rial and public frustration with government policies. Clashes between demonstrators and security forces have left several people dead and many arrested in cities beyond the capital. In response to the unrest, Trump publicly warned that the United States is prepared to support protesters if Iranian authorities violently suppress them, saying it was “locked and loaded” to act if more demonstrators are killed. This marked a rare explicit expression of support for Iranian protesters by a US president.
Tehran’s Reaction and International Tension
Iran’s diplomatic appeal to the UN stresses that external interference in its internal affairs would violate international law and could escalate regional tensions. Iranian officials have also reiterated their right to defend national sovereignty and warned that unlawful external pressure could lead to serious consequences. The appeal reflects deepening diplomatic friction between Tehran and Washington as both sides exchange strong rhetoric while protests continue to challenge the Iranian government’s handling of economic and social issues.
