Iran Suspends Visa Waiver For Indian Nationals
The government of the Islamic Republic of Iran has suspended its visa-waiver facility for ordinary Indian passport holders, starting 22 November 2025. From that date, Indian nationals will need to obtain a visa before entering or transiting through Iran.
Reasons Behind The Move
The decision follows multiple reports of Indian citizens being lured to Iran on false promises of employment or onward travel to third countries and then falling victim to kidnapping or ransom demands. In response, Iran’s authorities acted to curb the misuse of the visa-free entry mechanism. In a related note, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a travel advisory urging travellers to Iran to remain vigilant and avoid any intermediaries offering visa-free transit or job offers via Iran.
Implications For Travellers And Relations
The change affects both tourism and transit travellers from India. Indian travellers who planned to use Iran as a transit point to other countries or as part of regional travel will now need to apply for visas in advance. The MEA advisory reflects concern for the safety of Indian nationals abroad and underscores Delhi’s attention to emerging cross-border threats linked to human trafficking and organised crime. Bilateral ties between India and Iran are expected to accommodate this shift while managing travel flows and security protocols.
What Travellers Should Do
Indian travellers to Iran should verify visa requirements well ahead of departure, ensure travel is booked via legitimate agents, and refrain from dealings that promise visa-free entry or onward travel through Iran. Those seeking transit through Iran should check airline boarding rules and visa obligations at the point of embarkation.
