Iran Summons Hungarian Envoy Over EU Sanctions Dispute

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has summoned Hungary’s ambassador in Tehran, Giola Peto, in response to new sanctions imposed by the European Union against several Iranian individuals and entities.

This diplomatic move follows the EU’s approval of sanctions on Monday, targeting seven individuals and seven entities, including Iran’s national carrier, Iran Air. The sanctions are linked to allegations of Iran transferring ballistic missiles to Russia for use in the Ukraine conflict.

Iran Condemns EU’s Sanctions as Illegal

During the meeting, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs strongly criticized the EU’s decision, calling it an “unacceptable” use of coercive measures. He emphasized that Iran’s military and defense collaborations with other nations are “legal” and focused on national security, beyond the purview of third-party interference.

The Iranian official further condemned the EU’s sanctions against Iranian airlines as a “clear violation of international law” and inconsistent with Europe’s stated commitments. He urged the EU not to be influenced by “anti-Iranian circles” and warned against compromising longstanding diplomatic ties with Iran.

Broader Tensions and Regional Dynamics

This diplomatic protest occurs amid long-standing military ties between Iran and Russia, both of which have faced Western sanctions. Iran’s relationship with Russia includes the acquisition of the Russian S-300 anti-missile system in 2015, underscoring their strategic alliance. Iran has maintained that its military advancements, including missile and drone capabilities, are purely defensive and will not be up for negotiation.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei also criticized the EU’s sanctions earlier in the day, labeling the actions as unjustifiable and a violation of international norms, including human rights. He reiterated Iran’s stance that its defense capabilities would continue to be strengthened in the face of external pressure.

As Hungary holds the presidency of the Council of the European Union, Iran’s summoning of its ambassador represents a significant diplomatic gesture, highlighting the deepening rift between Iran and the EU over regional security and international sanctions.
