Iran Meets European Powers in Geneva Amid Sanctions Threat
Senior officials from Iran and the European powers—France, Britain, and Germany (E3)—met in Geneva for urgent talks as the threat of renewed sanctions looms. The discussions focus on whether Iran will allow international nuclear inspections and resume dialogue or face a “snapback” of United Nations sanctions linked to the 2015 nuclear deal. The mechanism expires on October 18 unless activated earlier.
High Stakes Before the Deadline
The E3 have set the end of this month as the decision point on whether to trigger sanctions. Their demands include restoring International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) access, disclosing enriched uranium stockpiles, and engaging in indirect diplomacy possibly involving the U.S. Observers warn that failure to comply could deepen Iran’s isolation.
Russia Proposes a Delay
Russia has suggested extending the current framework by six months, which would delay the sanctions snapback. While Moscow cannot veto the sanctions return, its push highlights the geopolitical maneuvering underway as the deadline approaches.
Iran’s Position and Remaining Defiance
Tehran continues to resist direct talks with Washington but has expressed willingness for mediated discussions. Iranian officials maintain their nuclear program is peaceful despite enrichment levels reaching 60%, close to weapons-grade. They also cite recent U.S. and Israeli strikes as reasons for refusing full inspection access, claiming safety concerns at nuclear sites.
